New Author and New Series

Elaine Barlow going to sleep listening to an audiobook

Volume 1. Books 1 thru 3

I have been in search of a new police procedural series for a while now. Having finally come to the end of the Kim Stone series – or at least caught up to the latest book – I have really been at a loss to find something just as good with not only a good story, but also something that has a good number of books that are all read by the same narrator. You’d be surprised at how often this isn’t the case. Sometimes long series will switch narrators in the middle or just decide to change them.

The Cavendish and Walker series came up on my radar because I was specifically looking for something that was more of a “partners in crime” type series especially if the two partners are from different worlds either personally or professionally. With Cavendish and Walker it’s both which makes it even more interesting. I won’t say that the series is terribly complicated or that even the writhing is going to win any hefty literary awards, but if you’re looking for a “cozy” police procedural series that isn’t too violent, doesn’t have any sex stuff in it, and just has a straightforward “who dun it and why” premis, this is absolutely the series for you.

I purchased a bundle from Audible which packages books 1 thru 3 and books 4-6.

I already finished books 1 thru 3 before I finished all the updates to my blog (I was in the process of redesigning and reediting years worth of essays and other content for several weeks) so i will start on book 4 going forward. I really enjoyed the series a great deal and I’m excited to continue with it.

  • Book 1 – Deadly Games
  • Book 2 – Fatal Justice
  • Book 3 – Death Track

There are 13 books in total, all read by the amazing Clare Corbett, and a 14th – I guess the final book – will be coming soon. (Book 13 came out March 14th 2024).

Standouts! 🥰 Cozy police procedural. Uncomplicated. Easy to follow and enjoy. Clare does an AMAZING job will the voices.
Disliked 😒 No frills. May be too simplistic for sophisticated crime readers. Walker's insecurities about being "under educated and poor" are annoying, tedious, but relatable.
Summary
DCI Whitney Walker and Forensic psychologist, Dr. Georgina Cavendish couldn't be more different but these two headstrong women make a great team. The crimes are not complicated and may be a bit simplistic for serious crime consumers but the series is "cozy" and makes for a great, quick read.

As far as I'm concerned, Chapter 8 is the absolute best chapter in the entire book. This is also where the story pretty much comes to a very abrupt end.

Of course I want to know how Christian is going to handle that infamous scene, but I'm interested in his take on the psychological horror more.
