Summary

Turning stressful or painful situations into opportunities for growth or learning is just another way of choosing light over darkness.

Elaine @thewebrecluse

December 15 2022 7:32am

There are many ways to deal with external stressors … I choose to approach whatever the disturbance is with a focus on gaining or sharing wisdom regarding it instead of internalizing the negative energy and ruining my body and spirit with it. Turning stressful or painful situations into opportunities for growth or learning is just another way of choosing light over darkness. I think if you value yourself then you owe yourself the best chance at a healthy, quality life.

Things disturb me all the time … what can I learn from those disturbances? What can I learn about myself? What can I learn about others? How can I apply that knowledge in a forward-thinking way? Can that wisdom help someone else? These are the questions that always come up immediately for me in disturbing situations, not black swirling miasmas of anger but that there is a chance to gain something useful or share something useful in the wake of the pain and suffering. To do GOOD from the BAD.

My parents grew up in terrible times and their parents before them in even WORSE times … times even worse than today (though we’re rapidly getting there). It was impossible to blame them for their anger and frustration and their inability to see a villain in every White person (they weren’t entirely wrong). Their scorched earth mentality of how one should move through the world was understandable … but taking that anger out on children … externalizing their frustrations? That’s sickness.

Anger is a weakness and it’s an offshoot of fear … Fear is the base emotion.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘭𝘭-𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘯.
Seneca

When you remove the fear … which is paralyzing and alters both the chemical makeup of the mind and body beyond your control … then what are you left with? You’re left with the ability to THINK and CHOOSE … the ability to move from passion into wisdom.

𝘍𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥-𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳. 𝘍𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦-𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. — The Litany Against Fear (Dune)

How many people would choose differently if their bodies and minds were free of the psyche altering effects of fear and subsequently anger?

Just think about that for a moment …

𝘈𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘢 (𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘬: ἀπάθεια; 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘢- “𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵” 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴 “𝘴𝘶𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨” 𝘰𝘳 “𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯”), 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘮, 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘣𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. 𝘐𝘵 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦.

I do get occasional comments from people who believe that choosing peace … choosing wisdom … choosing light is somehow a weakness. They find strength in their anger. They wear their fury like a superhero costume. They think it protects them in some way … but it only weakens them and as they walk through the world they scorch the earth further with that negativity and rage that hurts them as well as others.

Anger is weakness, not strength. It controls YOU, not the other way around.

I think people find it easier to just make excuses.

I could have made plenty too growing up under the circumstances I did and maybe it would have been understandable in the same way I understand my parents and their upbringing and their anger. But I chose differently. I didn’t just give in to all that darkness, anger, animalism, brainwashing and weird racist grooming. I became something else entirely.

People can choose once they are able to see and think CLEARLY … outside of anger and fear.

My parents WANTED me to be angry and afraid. They wanted me to hate the world and distrust “the Whites” and see the world through the horrible lens of their oppression. All I learned from that is what it did to them as people. I learned to think beyond it and to see myself as a whole person capable of rising above it by facing and understanding it …

… but not until I was FREE of the grip of it. Not until I could live outside of anger and fear and see the world CLEARLY and REALISTICALLY.

When you trap yourself in a state of anger and fear all the time … your world is twisted, and you can’t see anything accurately.

We are living in a world currently that has been shaped by generations of anger and fear … and where has that gotten us?

At some point you have to realize that it’s not the way.

And yet social media, including CoSo, is filled with mindless animals who haven’t figured that out yet. Raging, screaming, salty animals who feel that anger and fear are still the way to come at and solve problems.

People don’t ever learn.

They just make excuses to justify ruining themselves and others.

A Note From Elaine

This is my experience, not yours.

I don’t write reviews perse. I write about MY EXPERIENCE with media. If it resembles a review that’s because I’m trying to communicate what media means to ME which has absolutely NOTHING to do with YOU. The existence of my experience doesn’t invalidate yours in any way. If you are triggered by what other people write about art, that is a YOU issue and you should seek help for your emotional dysregulation problem instead of attacking or bullying others for expressing their SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE with art. You are not the center. Yours is not the default experience.

As far as I'm concerned, Chapter 8 is the absolute best chapter in the entire book. This is also where the story pretty much comes to a very abrupt end.

In the world of Lazarus there is the wealthy and then there is Waste. In 2025, in the United States, I am considered Waste and reading a comic about the brutal dislike, disregard, and destruction of Waste is too difficult.
