Wow! The Best Chapters So Far!

Audiobook
Once and Future
Once and Future

Chapters 17-20

I woke up to pee at 4am and when I got back to bed I went back and restarted where I’d remembered falling asleep. It drifted off somewhere but when I roused back it was right at the beginning of two of these epic chapters. I was wide awake the entire time … slipping back into sleep after they were finished.

I said this the other day, but with even double passion now, I ADORE Carole. I would read an ENTIRE book just about her and her adventures.

I can honestly say that the plot/mystery/police procedural part doesn’t interest me at all and even though I know that Joy is known for police procedural crime books (I’ve read almost all of them), I actually wish she’d stuck with this series.

When I Think Of Carole … I immediately think of Duncan’s grandmother in Once And Future.

Picking Up Speed

Audiobook

Chapters 9 thru 16

I have been slowly working my way through this book and I’ve been exhausted and falling asleep quickly lately. When I wake up in the middle of the night, I take the time to go back and find what I remember and start there again. I really am enjoying this book so I wanna not miss anything.

I adore Ellie and Carole’s relationship so much. Carole reminds me of Judi Dench’s character, Eleanor Lavish, in Room With A View … I love how caring and nurturing she is but she also has this wild streak that makes her so lovable.

I am barely registering the actual plot right now. I just really love these characters.

This Is Amazing!

Audiobook

Chapter 1 thru ??

I fell asleep. I woke up. I restarted. I woke up in the middle of something. I restarted. I fell asleep again. Honestly, I think I remember up to chapter 4? I have no idea but it was REALLY REALLY different. I learned from the author’s note that this was her very first book and it was never published. You can absolutely see where she ended up from this book but I WISH she had kept kind of “other”-esque type concepts. She said blending crime with other genres wasn’t a thing back when she wrote this and that’s a shame because I love the mix of these concepts – think Harry Dresden.

I will be restarting from the beginning tonight because I was really enjoying it. I didn’t even get to the “police” part of anything yet.

I love the main character and her relationships with the 2 older women the best.

This book has my attention! I love Sophie Rundle’s voice so narration, of course, is absolutely epic.

A Note From Elaine

This is my experience, not yours.

I don’t write reviews perse. I write about MY EXPERIENCE with media. If it resembles a review that’s because I’m trying to communicate what media means to ME which has absolutely NOTHING to do with YOU. The existence of my experience doesn’t invalidate yours in any way. If you are triggered by what other people write about art, that is a YOU issue and you should seek help for your emotional dysregulation problem instead of attacking or bullying others for expressing their SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE with art. You are not the center. Yours is not the default experience.

As far as I'm concerned, Chapter 8 is the absolute best chapter in the entire book. This is also where the story pretty much comes to a very abrupt end.

Tomb of the Sun King by Jacquelyn Benson

Reading Tomb of the Sun King is like going all the way Egypt just to take a selfie in front of a pyramid and then taking a video of yourself getting fucked on a sarcophagus just to post it on Instagram. Alex Picard's performance is the only reason I'm continuing this book.

In the world of Lazarus there is the wealthy and then there is Waste. In 2025, in the United States, I am considered Waste and reading a comic about the brutal dislike, disregard, and destruction of Waste is too difficult.
